#Vanlife camp lite - Kingdom & Lake Willoughby


Send your kids on every mountain biker’s dream trip! Days spent riding some of the best trail networks in the state, expert level coaching to make the riding smoother and more fun, and evenings recounting stories from the trail around a tasty meal and warm fire at a beautiful campground. This week will be a full immersion in the Vermont mountain bike lifestyle. Our 2025 edition will be based in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom!

#VanLife Camp Lite

This shortened version of our popular week-long VanLife Camp is perfect for riders not quite ready for 5 days of trail riding.

Travel with the SMBA van and trailer for a ‘Best Of’ tour of Vermont. Expect plenty of fresh singletrack, swimming holes, maple creemees, and VT State Park campground.

Riders will cover between 10 to 15 miles each day on a variety of trails from flowy to rooty and technical. Coaches will start each day with warm-up exercises and skills practice to prepare riders for what they will encounter on the trails at each location. The group will focus on fun rides with time to stop and session sections on different trails before and after lunch. This will be an adventurous week of exploring new trails and gaining some awesome bike skills!

In the evenings, riders will clean their bikes and check over their equipment, help make dinner, and have time to play soccer, softball or games and enjoy the campfire before heading to sleep in tents!

All food, State park camping fees and trail pass fees are included. All participants also receive an SMBA tech tee.

    • Rider is comfortable riding a variety of singletrack trails

    • Riders should have a strong grasp on skills such as: controlled braking, front wheel lift, standing climbing, and leaning the bike into corners

    • Riders should also have a strong grasp on skills such as: track stand, roll downs, pumping, berm and flat cornering, and rear wheel lifts.

    • Rider can participate in physical activity for at least three hours (with breaks) and is excited to progress their riding

  • While trail riding coaches will reinforce the following skills

    • Improve skills such as; track stand, bunnyhop, high speed cornering, drops, and jumping

    • Master techniques for riding tight switchbacks, berms with speed, and riding flat corners

    • Learn line selection on larger features like steep and loomy trail sections or rock faces

    • Take off and landing larger drops

    • Trail-side repairs & trail/feature risk analysis

  • Bike:

    • MTB Helmet (a normal, half shell, helmet is great)

    • Hydration pack (1.5L or more water bladder)

    • Optional Riding Snacks - 2 high energy snacks per day (SMBA will also have extra available)

    • Bike gloves - 1 pair (full finger are best)

    • Bike Shoes - 1 pair (close toed shoes with good sticky rubber for flat pedals, or clipless shoes if on clipless pedals)

    • Bike shorts (2 or 3)

    • Chamois (2 or 3)

    • Socks - at least 4 pairs

    • Bike jerseys and/or t-shirts (at least 2)

    • Extra cash for any additional bike repairs, or a creemee stop (~$50)

    • Bike repair kit: multi-tool, chain quick link (properly sized for bike chain), tire lever(s), tire plugs, mini pump, tube (same as bike’s wheel size), duct tape, zip ties.

EmpowHER Mountain Bike Camp: Ride, Learn, Conquer (Overnight Camp)


The EmpowHER Mountain Bike Camp is the ultimate all-girls adventure, dedicated to developing technical skills, building confidence, and celebrating the fun of riding with friends. Whether you're new to mountain biking or a seasoned trailblazer, this camp offers tailored experiences to level up your skills while connecting with a community of like-minded riders. Smaller groups and breakout sessions to enhance skills and group activities and rides to build camaraderie! Day and overnight options.

EmpowHER Camp

Camp Goals:

Trail Fundamentals: Master the basics like body positioning, braking techniques, and balance to tackle diverse terrain with ease.

Climbing Techniques: Learn how to optimize your pedaling power and handle challenging ascents with confidence.

Descending withConfidence: Practice controlled descents on varying gradients, focusing on line choice, speed management, and flow.

Cornering & Technical Terrain: Hone your cornering skills to take tight turns with speed and precision. Navigate rock gardens, roots, and drops with advanced skills training from expert coaches. Explore fun techniques like bunny hops, small jumps, and pumping through trails for a playful yet controlled ride.

Hands-On Workshops:

Bike Maintenance 101: Gain practical skills like fixing flats, adjusting derailleurs, and maintaining your suspension.

Trailside Repairs: Learn quick fixes to keep you riding confidently, no matter where the trail takes you.

Each day combines skill sessions with epic guided trail rides, allowing campers to put their new techniques into practice. Off the bike, enjoy team challenges, campfire stories (overnight option), and wellness activities like yoga for riders. The focus isn’t just on improving skills—it’s about building camaraderie and creating unforgettable memories in the great outdoors.

All food, State park camping fees and trail pass fees are included. All participants also receive an SMBA tech tee.

  • This is an all abilities camp. Small groups of similarly skilled riders will be formed and based on ability, some groups will explore different trails or trail systems using the SMBA van and trailer.

    At minimum:

    • Rider is confident riding a bike, and is just getting started with using their gears and hand brakes correctly

    • Rider has experience on beginner singletrack, gravel and/or grass and shows interest in more difficult terrain

    • Rider can participate in physical activity for at least two hours (with breaks) and is enthusiastic about learning to ride (some nerves are okay!)

    • Skill goals are based on the rider’s level entering camp.

      Beginners (Levels 1-2) will work on:

      • Equal braking on varied terrain

      • Learn to stabilize bike/body through sharp bumps varied beginner/intermediate trail features

      • Arms and Legs engaged in active riding and using proper bike/body separation

      • Gain trail awareness by learning the names of trail features and proper trail etiquette

      • Learn to keep your eyes up and scanning your environment

      • Learn the movements for ‘pumping’ the bike through terrain

      • Begin learning the bike/body alignment for riding berms at controlled speeds

      More advanced riders (Levels 3-4) will work on:

      • Review beginner skills

      • Through games and on trail application, riders will learn and improve skills such as; track stand, bunnyhop, high speed cornering, drops, and jumping

      • Riders will learn various ways of ‘seeing’ the trail and interpreting it through their riding ability and style

      • Learn to lift your front wheel off the ground to clear features by finding grip, balance, and appropriate speed

      • Master techniques for riding tight switchbacks, berms with speed, and riding flat corners

      • Learn line selection on larger features like steep and loomy trail sections or rock faces

      • Take off and landing larger drops

      • Trail/feature risk analysis

Best of Stowe (Day & Overnight Option)


Is it your dream to ride your bike all day with friends, hang out by rivers, ride your bike some more, and chow down on hearty camp food? Come join the ultimate Stowe mountain bike experience by riding all the best trails in the area with our home for the week at a beautiful state park campground at the base of Mt. Mansfield!

Best of Stowe: Overnight Option

Our small crew will spend the days riding and exploring trails including Cady Hill, Adams Camp, Sterling Valley, and even some off the map favorites ;).

Incorporated into each day of riding will be some fun skills work utilizing a variety of natural trail features, pump tracks, and progression skills areas. There will also be swimming and ice cream stops along the way to make the most of what Stowe has to offer! Each evening, we will cook our meals at camp and enjoy them around a fire before earning some well deserved rest in our tents.

This camp isn't solely about hitting the trails. Our all-encompassing approach to mountain biking extends to bike maintenance workshops, trail etiquette sessions, and learning how to make personal assessments of risk and reward using the techniques from the Flying Ryan Hawks Foundation. These additional elements ensure that participants not only become better riders but also responsible trail stewards.

We will wrap up the week with a fun day of games and pizza celebration where riders are awarded their SMBA tech shirts and stickers!

    • Rider is building confidence negotiating rocks, roots, and logs. Riders should also have a strong grasp on skills such as: controlled braking, front wheel lift, standing climbing, and leaning the bike into corners

    • Rider can participate in physical activity for at least three hours (with breaks) and is excited to progress their riding

    • Improve carrying momentum on the trail through; line choice, proper gearing, ratchet pedaling, and pressure control

    • Introduce aspects of pressure control to lead to skills such as; front wheel lift, rear wheel lift, bunnyhop, and jumping

    • Understanding and applying the different skills for berm and flat cornering

    • Learn to ride small drops safely and in control

    • Beginner bike mechanics

    • Learn what to carry in your pack on a mountain bike ride

    • Introduction to trail/feature risk analysis

    • Introduction to bicycle mechanics. Including:

      Safety Check, Cleaning, Repair Kit, Flat Tires, Chains, Understanding your brakes and deraileur

  • Bike:

    • MTB Helmet (a normal, half shell, helmet is great)

    • Hydration pack (1.5L or more water bladder)

    • Optional Riding Snacks - 2 high energy snacks per day (SMBA will also have extra available)

Do you love mountain biking and want to capture the action on camera? Ever wonder how those video shots look so good on Instagram? Let the SMBA REEL Camp teach you how! With the help of our professional videographers and our expert coaching staff you can learn different filming and editing techniques to get the shots of your dreams.

SMBA REEL Camp

This camp is a must for passionate mountain bikers who dream of capturing the thrill of their riding adventures on film! Named a “mountain biking mecca” by The Boston Globe, Stowe’s extensive trail network of well-maintained, interconnected trails offers fun and challenging terrain, and is the perfect backdrop to immerse yourself in the world of mountain bike cinematography - learning and honing your riding and film skills alongside experienced industry professionals!

By watching videos along with commentary and guidance from experienced filmmakers, each rider can begin to create a vision of a video or shot in their mind. Then we will spend time sharing that vision with coaches and discussing the ways to turn it into reality on the trail. After on trail time, it’s time to learn about editing and putting all the pieces together. Evenings will be spent editing, collaborating, and gaining inspiration from a variety of mountain bike films.


Program Highlights:

  1. Technical Instruction: Learn the fundamentals of camera operation, composition, lighting, and audio recording. From basic techniques to advanced shooting strategies, our instructors will guide you in creating visually stunning and immersive mountain bike films.

  2. Creative Storytelling: Explore the art of storytelling in film, discovering how to convey your experiences and emotions through captivating narratives. Develop your storytelling skills through hands-on exercises and receive constructive feedback to refine your craft.

  3. Trail Exploration: Embark on thrilling mountain biking expeditions to various scenic locations around Stowe. Capture the excitement and beauty of riding through lush forests, flowy descents, and breathtaking vistas.

  4. Editing and Post-Production: Dive into the world of post-production, where you will learn how to edit your footage, add music and sound effects, and enhance the overall visual impact of your films using industry-standard software.

  5. Guest Speakers: Benefit from insightful talks by renowned mountain bike filmmakers and professionals who will share their experiences and offer valuable advice. Engage in discussions, ask questions, and gain valuable insights into the industry.

  6. Film Showcase: At the end of the camp, we will host a film showcase where you can share your creation with fellow participants, instructors, and the local mountain bike community. Celebrate your achievements and receive constructive feedback from our expert panel.
